The scientific name most commonly associated with the Dendrobaena worm is Dendrobaena veneta (pronounced den-dro-BEE-nuh veh-NAY-tuh).

If you've researched Dendrobaena worms before, you may also have come across Dendrobaena hortensis (den-dro-BEE-nuh hor-TEN-sis) or the older name Eisenia hortensis (eye-SEE-nee-uh hor-TEN-sis).

These are very closely related species and have often been confused or used interchangeably throughout the bait and vermiculture industries.

For most people, the distinction has little practical impact. Whether you're buying worms for fishing, composting or feeding amphibians, reptiles or poultry, both are used in very similar ways and fulfil the same roles.

Life Cycle

Like all earthworms, Dendrobaena develop through four distinct life stages:

Adult worms reproduce by producing small lemon-shaped cocoons. Each cocoon contains one or more developing worms, although the number that hatch successfully depends on conditions such as temperature and moisture.

After hatching, the tiny worms are almost transparent and only a few millimetres long. As they feed and grow, they enter the juvenile stage before eventually developing a clitellum — the thicker band around the body that indicates the worm has reached sexual maturity.

Once mature, healthy Dendrobaena worms continue producing cocoons throughout much of the year when conditions are favourable, allowing the colony to increase steadily over time.

Compared with some composting worms, Dendrobaena reproduce at a more moderate rate. However, their hardiness, lifespan and versatility make them an excellent choice for fishing bait, composting and animal feed.

One of the easiest ways to identify a mature breeding worm is by looking for the clitellum. If a worm doesn't yet have this thickened band around its body, it has not reached breeding age.
